The petition which was started by Ben Cook is calling for “a ‘regular’ terrestrial TV slot dedicated to show highlights from the weekend’s rugby union action across the UK.”
The campaign’s ethos is that “football has more than it’s fair share of coverage on Match of the Day, the repeat and Match of the Day 2, not to mention Football Focus and other round up programs. Considering all of our 4 home nations are in the top 10 IRB World Rankings, no real effort is made to try and capture this audience and we need to prove to the BBC via our campaign petition and through your support spreading the word, that the UK rugby lovers have a voice”.
The petition and Facebook campaign, which has over 17, 000 members, asks the BBC to commit to delivering a rugby highlights program on one of their channels over the weekend. The BBC currently have the rights to the highlights, and the campaign believes “the demand is there and we pay our TV licenses, I feel we have a public right to make our voice heard.”
The campaign has become so successful that you can now purchase your official “I want a MOTD for Rugby” t-shirt from the campaigns website at http://www.motdrugby.com
