After the disappointment of last Saturday in Paris there is a silver lining for England rugby prop forward Matt Stevens - his version of ‘The Gambler’ released via iTunes on Saturday 20th October.
The track was originally made famous by Kenny Rogers but this version is aimed at raising money for two very worthwhile causes. It had reached number 34 on the iTunes chart by Monday morning.

The story behind the song is that Matt has always liked it and first rehearsed it last year during his appearances on ITV’s celebrity X Factor.  According to Matt “I didn’t get to sing it on the show and not long after I decided to record it with a view to helping raise money for charity.”

The reason it has become popular with the team is “It is one of a dozen songs I can actually play on my guitar” said Matt.  “I often bring my guitar on the team bus for a sing song and this track became a favourite with the boys who love to join in the chorus …..with a lot of enthusiasm!! The team soon adopted it and it is now something we sing in the changing room.”  According to Matt “…it is also one of the few songs the team can actually sing in key!”

Their will be two charities benefiting from this.  First is the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the second being the NSPCC.

NMCF UK Executive Director Kathi Scott said, “The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is a leading development agency in South Africa. Matt Stevens has been an ongoing and loyal donor who has done much to raise our profile in the UK and we welcome such generous support through yet another exciting initiative that Matt is involved in.”

NSPCC fundraising manager Sophie Moss said: “We’re immensely proud to benefit from Matt’s recording of a song that means so much to the England rugby team. They’ve been fantastic supporters of the NSPCC since 2000 and we’re very grateful for all they’ve done to help our work to end cruelty to children.”
